Algae Diplomacy at De Langste Dag

Platform for Algae Diplomacy (Hélène Meyer & Filip Van Dingenen) present Ostend Midsummer on Velvet Horn during De langste dag (‘The Longest Day’), Ostend.
20/06/2026, 18-20h

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, KAAP and Mu.ZEE present The Longest Day. From sunrise to sunset, artists move between Mu.ZEE and the Droge Coo in Ostend. Through sculptural actions and contemporary rituals, they attempt to grasp time or turn it to stone. Some actions are visible and loud, others barely perceptible. The interventions follow the rhythm of the sun, the tides, and the clock. It will be a long day — nearly the longest of the year. Only when the sun sets will the happening come to an end… and the afterparty begin.

Can algae save the climate? Platform for Algae Diplomacy believes they can! Algae convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and are a source of natural compounds with antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. In other words, algae not only help combat climate change, they are also beneficial to human health. At Platform for Algae Diplomacy’s sculptural installation, you can taste delicious seaweed dishes, learn about the role of algae within a broader ecological story, and reflect on the rights and ceremonial powers of algae around the world. Enjoy!
