Casting Call: So, You Think About Abstraction the Last Minutes Before You Die?
Eleni Kamma presents her project Casting Call in a solo exhibition at SPACE, Liège
30/10 – 04/12/2021. Opening: 29/10/2021, 18h30 with a performance at 19h30
Casting Call (2017-ongoing) is a series of related attempts, events, and manifestations. It is an investigation into the notion of parrhesia, the courage to speak one’s mind, approached from a comedic and excessive perspective. In Casting Call, Eleni Kamma employs performative strategies and appropriates theatrical tools to playfully ask serious questions about living well together and the role of public space and time in contemporary Europe.
Launched in 2002 by Belgian artist Alain De Clerck, SPACE Collection is building a net of European cities linked by a trans-border collection of contemporary art. The works are acquired thanks to interactive sculptures set up in public spaces. Whenever a visitor inserts a coin into a SPACE machine, he animates the sculpture and gets a ticket to poetry or cultural prize. Then, money is collected, increased by sponsorship and transformed into works of art. In Liege since 2002 and in Maastricht from 2013 until 2019, the two first culture machines already allowed to buy 130 works mixing genres, material supports, techniques and more or less renowned artists. SPACE Collection also promotes visual arts by curating exhibitions and organizing lectures and events.
