Leaks & Labour: On the Material Politics of Lactation
Public programme for the current solo exhibition of Katya Ev Anton at CC Strombeek
18/01/2026, 14h – 20h
In response to Katya Ev Anton’s current solo exhibition at CC Strombeek, you are invited to participate in a public program featuring a guided tour, film screening by Cladia Lomoschitz and panel discussion with Mathilde Cohen, major academic figure working around topics of milk and lactation. The public program will be followed by a musical performance by Palestinian artist Aysha E Arar. The day will conclude at 18:30 with a festive New Year’s toast.
The day will focus on breastfeeding, the central theme of the exhibition. From a queer, non-binary perspective, the artist challenges the invisibility and idealization of lactation, long represented through male-dominated iconographies of the Virgo Lactans, and reclaims it as a lived, shared, and political experience.
14:30-15:30 Guided tour Lactating Bodies: 20251031-0201, Katya Ev Anton
Curator Azad Asifovich offers a guided tour of the exhibition, followed by coffee and an informal exchange.
15:45-16:20 Film screening LACTANS, Claudia Lomoschitz
Claudia Lomoschitz will present their film LACTANS (2024), which addresses art-historical representations of breastfeeding. In the film, Lomoschitz challenges the idea that lactation is something that only women are biologically capable of and highlights patriarchal logics of violence. Art-historical images emerge from a digital ocean of milk, telling counter-hegemonic stories of lactation. From Hapi, the Egyptian intersex God of fertility, to the Greco-Roman story of Pero breastfeeding her imprisoned mother. A performative narration of myths and legends examines the reminiscence of history in contemporary biopolitics. Depictions travel through the eyes of time; legends echo deep down in our cells. Imagine history as a gulping throat reaching through time. How can moist power relations and opaque oppression be liquified?
