Reading Room #27: From radiators to relational infrastructure

Starting from the images and drawings titled Fire, Smoke and Dust presented by Clémentine Vaultier, Maximiliaan Royakkers and Ciel Grommen during Radiator at 019, we read and discuss the text ‘We will be making active form’ by Keller Easterling.

24/02/2023, 16-18h

019, Ghent

019 no longer finds itself at the edge of town: residential towers, supermarkets, banks, gas stations, playgrounds and parking lots envelop the building. At the same time, 019’s program is moving into public space more and more. It begs the question what this building is, what its function might be in a landscape that is no longer post-industrial but gentrified. The former welding factory is integrated in the zoning plan for the Oude Dokken as a building with a public function that both supports and complements the new (residential) developments. This reading room and the exhibition Radiator are part of a series of attempts at finding out what this public function could be: interventions that delve into the potential of a perforated building.

How could an institution radiate towards its neighborhood?

Follow-up event: on 18 March (13-19h), Clementine Vaultier, Maximilian Royakkers and Ciel Grommen invite you to join them on a smoking journey by bike, encountering old and new chimneys and heating devices around Ghent. Together with invited heat practitioners and thinkers, we will create unexpected relations, feeding off and into the atlas of ovens by the three artists for the Radiator exhibition.

Text in English. Copies will be provided. If you would like to read the texts in advance, feel free to send us an email: info@caveat.be.

Caveat’s events are free of charge, and everybody is welcome.
